Last night and today were definately the most difficult days of my week. Almost every Saturday night I watch a movie and as I was eating dinner last night that craving for the screen creeped up on me. To make matters worse, "Them" came in on Netflix. I felt myself learing towards the TV, my eyes flicking in the direction of the family room. But, after telling myself that Thoreau would not approve, I finally veered away from the television.
But, alas, today I let down Henry. I was out Christmas shopping at Dicks and of course the Eagles Giants game was on every flat screen in view. I was trying to ignore the exciting HD, when suddenly everyone in the check out line let out a bunch of yells and I couldn't help it. I looked up and there was the reciever scoring a touchdown! I mean, how could I look away, when every shopper's eyes were transfixed on DeSean Jackson's legs flying down the field? I am dearly sorry Mr. Thoreau, but this is was inevitable trap.
In the context of the times, Transcendenalist themes meant getting in touch with nature, whereas today they mean "going green." Transcendentalists back then were poets and writers, whereas today the modern Transcendentalists is most likely referred to as a "hippy."
"Don't waste yourself in rejection, nor bark against the bad, but chant the beauty of the good"
-Ralph Waldo Emerson
The quote represents my week as a Transcendentalist. I learned to not hang on my craving for television, and instead avert my attention in the direction of something else. Once I got over not being able to watch, I was actually very happy with the time I had for other things.
